Anti-reflection film is much less well known to private individuals than UV or anti-vandalism window film, but it is of real interest for windows in the home. Until now, it was mainly used in shop windows or exhibition windows to prevent light from interfering with the view of the objects on display. Today, this film is making a timid entry into interiors, to offer everyone a perfect view from the inside to the outside and vice versa and mostly to protect against prying eyes and protect your home from burglars.

Role of the anti-reflection window film

The special feature of glazing is that it always reflects light, and it is precisely this feature that hinders the view from the inside outwards and vice versa. Using anti-reflection films, objects appear much clearer and colour distortion is reduced, so the mirror effect is largely eliminated.
As with all adhesive films, it can be applied to existing glazing to change its characteristics. According to the manufacturers, it reduces the mirror effect of a pane of glass by more than 90%.

Anti-reflective window treatment

This is a treatment that must be applied in the factory during the manufacture of the glass. It consists of depositing transparent layers of metal oxides on both sides of the glass. In the case of double glazing, both sides of the glass are treated before assembly. This manufacturing process is also applicable to laminated glass.
In this case, the reflection effect is 10 times less than with conventional glazing. As an example, the residual reflection of a standard pane is around 8% and drops to 1% for anti-reflective glass.

The advantages of anti-reflective window coating

The first advantage is that it gives you an absolutely clear view of what is behind the glass. Colours are no longer altered by the reflection of the sun. In addition, there is less need for night-time lighting, as the reflection of light is less, thus saving electricity.
The anti-reflection treatment is combined with ultra-violet protection; it blocks 99% of the UV rays responsible for the discoloration of objects and thus their deterioration over time.

Applying the anti-reflective window film

Anyone can do it, but installation requires patience and care:
– The key to success lies in meticulousness; the preparation of the glass and, in particular, perfect cleaning, is the basis for that.
– The glass, but also the film, must be kept moist throughout the installation.
– Finally, the film must be smoothed to remove excess water.

Buying an anti-reflective window film

You can find anti-reflection films on the websites dedicated to window films, but please note that not all of them offer this product. As far as anti-reflective treated glass is concerned, you will have to contact the glass manufacturers or installers who will be able to advise you on the most suitable product for your needs.
The anti-reflective film is sold by the square meter and its price is around 60 $/m². For treated glazing, it is advisable to ask for quotes from professionals, depending on the size of the openings.
