The 3-point lock belongs to the category of multipoint locks.
A lock can be presented with a single point of anchorage; it is called a single point lock.
There are also multipoint locks.
– 3-point lock,
– 5-point locks.
There are also other locks, such as the espagnolette lock, the hook lock or the banging lock.
3-point lock: three different locking systems
The 3-point lock provides additional protection for an entrance door, for example.
This lock closes three locking points at the same time.
The sidelocks are located:
– at the bottom of the door,
– in the middle of the door,
– at the top of the door.
The vertical locks are located:
– at the bottom of the door,
– at the top of the door.
2 types of 3-point locks: mortise or surface
The locksmith market offers two types of 3-point locks.
The 3-point surface lock: visible lock
The 3-point surface lock has anchoring points:
– on the side,
– at the top and the bottom.
This type of lock is visible, so you must protect it from the outside by covering it.
The 3-point mortise lock, to be integrated or recessed
The 3-point mortise lock has anchoring points:
– on the side,
– at the top and the bottom.
The bolts of the 3-point mortise lock can be:
– outward,
– tilting.
The 3-point mortise lock is installed on doors:
– Wooden doors,
– metal,
– PVC,
– aluminum.
Please note: A mortise lock rarely exceeds 3 points of anchorage due to the complexity of installation.
3-point lock: for newer doors
You can add a 3-point lock to any door built less than 20 years ago.
In most cases, it is A2P approved.
This certification does not guarantee, however, the solidity of the door.
Afterwards, you can easily replace the cylinder used.
Note: In addition to the A2P certification of the lock you choose, check that the lock has a barrel on the outside to protect the lock.
Security and comfort of the 3-point lock
The 3-point lock offers advantages in terms of security and comfort:
– provides excellent protection for the home,
– is not difficult to install, even by yourself,
– is compatible with all models of recent doors: the parts of the lock may wear out over time but remain interchangeable,
– offers better sound and heat insulation of the house.
Price of the 3-point lock: more than $100.
The cost of a 3-point lock is high because of its technical characteristics.
It is, therefore, necessary to count between $120 and $600 for an A2P certified 3-point safety.
The differences explain the price differences:
– of quality ranges,
– of finish,
– dimensions, etc.
